THE TASMANIAN ELECTION The TCCL has released a statement to the media regarding a Bill of Rights for Tasmania and how it will be affected by the State's pending election. The TCCL urges all Tasmanians who are concerned about Civil Liberties in general and a Bill of Rights for Tasmania in particular to consider this information before casting their vote on Saturday.
RECENT EVENTS:
The TCCL has been in contact with each of the three major parties in State Government to find out what their stance on a Bill of Rights for Tasmania is. So far, Premier Paul Lennon has responded saying that he is not in favour of it, as has the leader of the Opposition, Rene Hidding.
Peg Putt (Leader of The Greens) said on Saturday March 11 that " To protect the rights and freedoms of our citizens, A Biill of Rights for Tasmania has become imperative with the enactment of draconian anti-terror laws and the incremental expansion of police powers under the Tasmanian Labour government. The Greens are committed to legislating a Bill of Rights. Our legislation has already been introduced to Parliament, and The Greens are calling for public consultation and feedback in order to improve the Bill before proceeding with debate."
